PE JJ (left) and Pres. Daniel

Rotaract Club of ATC is proud to announce the election of Rtr. Tham Jun Jie,  to the position of President Elect after a unanimous agreement from the Board of Directors. He will be taking over the Presidency from President Daniel Gan this coming July.

President Elect JJ (as he is affectionately known), joined the Club last June, and he had immediately made an impression with his commitment to the Club.

“He is very new to Rotaract. However, he is willing to learn, embrace and do his work with enthusiasm. Most importantly, he is willing to contribute and carry on the President’s baton.” President Daniel Gan.

“The most important quality a Rotaract President must possess is commitment to the Club. There is no doubt that JJ possesses this quality. There is no doubt that he is the best candidate to continue the great work of President Daniel, and bring this Club to even greater heights.” Immediate Past President Kwong Chiew Ee.

He’s an easy going person. I’ll be  looking forward to work with him in the forthcoming year. I will give my full support to you.  Gambateh JJ! I have faith in you.” Rtr. Lim Soo Wen, Funding Director

Congratulations PE JJ!

Rotary Battles Polio

30 12 2009

What is Polio?

Poliomyelitis or more commonly known as polio is a highly infectious disease caused by a virus. It invades the nervous system, and can cause total paralysis in a matter of hours. Over 50% of all polio cases involve children under the age of three. The virus normally enters the body through the mouth and multiplies in the intestine. One in 200 infections leads to irreversible flaccid paralysis (usually in the legs). Amongst those paralysed, 5%-10% die when their breathing muscles become immobilized. There is no cure for polio; it can only be prevented through immunization. It is estimated that more than 10 million children will be paralyzed in the next 40 years if the world fails to eradicate polio.

Rotary International PolioPlus Program

Through its PolioPlus program established in 1985, more than one million Rotary club members have volunteered their time and personal resources to protect more than two billion children in 122 countries from polio. To date, the organization has contributed more than US$700 million.

For more than 20 years, Rotary has led the private sector in the global effort to rid the world of this crippling disease in co-operation with World Health Organization, UNICEF and the US Centers for Disease Control.

In addition to providing financial and volunteer support, Rotary works to urge support from other public and private sector partners in their war against polio. This includes the campaign to End Polio Now, inspired by the extraordinary challenge grants received from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

End Polio Now: The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Challenge Grants

Rotary’s US$200 Million Challenge is the Rotary Foundation’s response to the two grants totaling $355 million from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to help eradicate polio. Every dollar given to PolioPlus will be counted toward the $200 million match, which must be completed by 30 June 2012. The resulting $200 million will directly support immunization campaigns in developing countries, where polio continues to infect and paralyze children.

How Can I Contribute to the PolioPlus Program?

Join us in Rotary Walks to End Polio Last Leg 8th January 2010 from Hockey Stadium, Jalan Duta to Dorsett Hotel Subang for District Rotary Conference (approx 35km).

RM100 to participate. All contributions will go to Rotary’s US$200million to match the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation US$355million for fight against polio.

The Four Way Test

25 12 2009

by IPP Kwong Chiew Ee

Everyone seeks validation. Even I do.

I ponder upon this as I was speaking to a friend today about doing what’s right, and what’s fair. I realise that sometimes, when I make decisions, especially when it involves something personal, I tend to seek out for people to validate my actions and decisions.

It turns out, that the root of the problem lies in there; that I always tried to make everyone satisfied and happy and my belief, a wrongful belief was that if everyone’s satisfied, it will be a good decision. But it is just not possible. You can’t make everyone happy.

As I wonder what I should do, and what shall be the best solution to the problem that I have now, it occurs to me that the the guide to my solution has always been here beside me; the four way test:

  1. Is it the truth?
  2. Is it fair to all concerned?
  3. Will it build goodwill and better friendship?
  4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

This test was introduced by former Rotary International President, Herbert J. Taylor as a guide to ethical practice in all the things we said, think or do. In all our actions, we should ask ourselves the four questions above and if the answers are of the affirmative, we shall go on with the solution. Of course, we may dispute, in a modern and materialistic world that we live in today, it would be impossible for us to strictly follow the test. But I believe that this is of your own will, as no external force can make you disapply the four way test, but yourself.

What comes first for us? Humanity or materialism? I admit it, I would sometimes be swayed to materialism. This, I would say is the result of lack of “spiritualism”. Of course, when I talk about spiritualism, I do not mean religion. By spiritualism, I meant compassion, forgiveness, selflessness, tolerance and humility. It is what shape our humanity and I believe these four-way test can be the guide to our spiritualism. Without spiritualism, there would be no humanity, and without humanity, we are just some lost souls.

And I call for all of you to at least try this four way test at some point of your life. I happen to chance upon a blog about the four way test, and I would like to share it with all of you, my readers. It is something really inspirational. You may think of it as naive, but I think the blog can provides us with so much optimism that we all badly need. Have a peek at it! http://thefourwaytest.wordpress.com/

P/s: This post was written and published two years ago in my personal blog. My experiment with The Four Way Test is still ongoing, but it’s safe to say that it has become my main source of inspiration.

District Rotaract Conference 09: We Sprout, We Grow, We Shine

21 12 2009

We Sprout, We Grow, We Shine!

Rotaract Club of ATC together with Rotaract Club of Port Klang Centennial and Rotaract Club  of Subang Jaya co-organised the District Rotaract Conference on 18th-20th  December 2009 at Perak Riverside Resort, Kuala Kangsar. The joint efforts of the three Rotaract  Clubs in District 3300 was paid off as there were good participation from various Rotaract  Clubs in the District. This is a big mile stone as this is the first time Rotaract Club of ATC accepting this challenging task and co-organizing a District event.

Two buses departed from KL Sentral on the morning of 18th December and we reached the resort around noon.  Lunch was provided. Soon after lunch, the activities for the Conference started. With a heart  of curiousity, Rotaractors of District 3300 departed to the first planned destination, the  Mariwasa Plant where the Royal medals and badges are made. This is a specialised and  exclusive industry and it was indeed an eye opener to all.  Next, it was time to visit the Istana Iskandariah. We were given the privilege to enter into the palace where the current Sultan will reside when His Royal Highness is in Kuala  Kangsar.

The Second District Board Meeting was also held on the first night, chaired by Acting District Rotaract Representative Sanjeev Kumar to discuss the affairs of the District.  Following that was some ice breaking games. The games lasted till the midnight and the night ended with the Rotaractors  dancing to the beat of Lagu Poco-poco. Rotaractors are good dancers! Yes they are!

Being responsible Rotaractors, everyone woke up in time for breakfast and prepare themselves for a talk by Chen Chow, a prominent speaker and the topic was “Youth  Empowerment”. Up next was the First Plenary Session where District Accounts were presented coupled up with some reports from the District Exco. In the afternoon of the second day, it was time for site visits again. We visited Masjid Ubadiah, Istana Kuning, Sultan Azlan Shah’s Gallery where belongings of the current Sultan of Perak are kept, and Rotaractors were given the chance to experience the making of Labu Sayung. After  the site visits, games were played in the Resort itself. It was a team based sports seeing each team striving hard to gain some points for their own respective team. At night, we were treated with BBQ styled dinner and time for fellowship among the Rotaractors was next.

First on the agenda on the last day was the Second Plenary Session which seeks to exchange views and discuss on the Conference theme “We Sprout, We Grow, We Shine”. Together with Acting DRR Sanjeev and  President Daniel, we are proud to have DGE Lim Kok Beng, New Generations Chair, PP Donny,  DRC Arthur Yeong and President Patrick of Rotary Club of Kuala Kangsar as the panelist for  that session. It was really heartwarming to see representative of each Rotaract Club exchanging their views and strengths of their own clubs. The desire to change the image of Rotaract was so strong and this is a big step towards bringing all Clubs together.

Every good thing must come to an end; it was time for us to depart from Kuala Kangsar. The Guest of Honour for the closing ceremony is our beloved and dedicated District Governor Leslie Salehuddin. After lunch and the closing ceremony, with a heavy heart and a heart to see change in Rotaract as a whole, Rotaractors departed from the resort.

What this Conference has achieved is to help the Rotaract in District 3300 as a whole in finding a better sense of direction – that is in order for Rotaract to stay relevant, there is a need for a change, in terms of culture and attitude. Rotaract, to move forward must exist not as fragmented clubs, but as ONE united District. There is no doubt that the Rotaract District is undergoing a tremendous positive change now. Let us hope, and endeavor to  achieve what we have set forth to do in this Conference.

Rtr Jessica Yong

Secretary, Rotaract Club of ATC

10 10 2009

The newly installed Board of Directors

The Rotaract Club of ATC celebrated its Second Installation Charity Night on 10 October 2009 at Leslie’s Hideaway, Taman Yarl, OUG. Guests and Rotaracters came dressed to the theme of the night, “Hawaiian”. Staying true to the Club’s motto, “Fellowship through Service”, profits from the event were channeled to the “Little Shoes for the African Children Fund” and the “Food Project for SJKT Bandar Kinrara Fund”, the two new charity funds set up by the Club.

The night was declared opened by the Guest of Honour, President Abuli Motiwala of the Rotary Club of Ampang. A splendid Hawaiian dance performed by the incoming Board of Directors immediately followed to get the crowd going. The crowd was entertained throughout the night by Jaryd Lok and Rakesh from the Music Club and The Swing. Also performing was ATC’s very own Joanna Henley, who is the current Miss Sabah and also the runner-up in Bintang RTM.

The outgoing Board of Directors

The General Manager if ATC, Ms. Betty Chin in her speech recognized the success of the outgoing Board of Directors and gave her vote of confidence to the incoming Board of Directors. The outgoing president, Charter President Kwong Chiew Ee, in her speech took the opportunity to say her thanks to those who have played their parts in the club’s success.

The highlight of the night was of course the passing of the Presidential Medal from CP Kwong Chiew Ee to President Elect Daniel Gan, which symbolized the transition of power from the outgoing president to the incoming president. The newly-installed President, Pres. Daniel then went on to address the audience before installing his Board of Directors. The Club also took the opportunity to present some books to the SJKT Bandar Kinrara School Library. The books are sponsored by Mr. Krishnan s/o Rengasamy.

The night ended with the incoming board of directors leading the crowd to the dance floor with the song Sway. Overall, the event was a huge success, and it served as a good indication that Rotaract Club of ATC is here to stay despite the retirement of its pioneers. Well done to the newly installed President Daniel Gan and his Board of Directors!
