Little Shoes Project-The Second Wave.

Posted in Uncategorized at 7:20 am by rotaractatc

The Little Shoes Project was initially launched in August 2009 and yielded a generous sum of profit, in which all went

Rtr. Audrey Tan, Rtr. Lim Soo Wen and Rtr. Hee Hui Ting.

to the Rotaract Club in Botswana to provide footwear for children. Continuing the dignified effort, Rotaract Club of ATC launched the Little Shoe Project again this year on the 8th October.

The Little Shoes Project hosts the objective to promote footwear awareness to the public with regards to the importance of shoes. Shoes, regarded as basic essentials of life have not been thoroughly appreciated, since most of us have been living in the luxury of having more than one pair of shoes.

However, as for the children in Africa, they are less fortunate and are deprived of such basic necessities in life. Everyday, they walk barefoot to obtain basic supplies such as food, water and even to school. To them, shoes are luxury items as they could not be able to afford shoes with the amount of money they have. Due to this matter, many of them contact diseases such as hookwarm disease, strongyloidiasis, podoconiosis and elephanticisis . Each year, 500 children die and other 200 are slowly playing with death.

Today, Rotaract Club of ATC, by virtue of launching the Little Shoe Project is lending a hand by selling key chains to raise funds for the African Children. A little effort like this can go a long way. The price of a single keychain is RM8. Our helpful and kind lecturers and students did not hesitate in spending their money to buy key chains to share our
mission in helping the African people.

The Rotaractors behind the scene.

On the other hand, our theme for our 3rd Installation Charity Night was Best Shoes in collaboration with this project. The collaboration of the project into the dinner was to reinstate the cause and in due course, raise funds for the concerned. The Little Shoe Project is an ongoing project by the Rotaract club of ATC. All proceedings of funds go to
Africa to purchase footwear for children.

theme for the night revolved around footwears which was The Best Shoes. The Third(and counting) Charity and Installation Dinner was held at Sri Damansara Club, Bandar Sri Damansara. The event served by fusing two purposes, namely to install the upcoming Board of Directors and to also expose as well as collect funds for the Little Shoes Project.

Group Picture with Rotaracters from other clubs.

The Little Shoes Project is a project that focuses on the daily life of African kids, who contacted hookwarm disease, strongyloidiasis, podoconiosis and elephanticisis, dieseases as such due to their lack of having a footwear. The primary aim of this project is so that we are able to support African kids in buying shoes for them.

Guests, Rotaracters and Rotarians started pouring in at 18.20 and by 19.00, the event began with the arrival of our Guest of Honour, President Rtn. PK Leong.

We were greeted by a fantastic performance by the Music Club of ATC, with Tuan Wern, Mah Sue Ann and Edwin Cheong on the stage merging three songs into one which was soothing and beautifully done.

The New Board of Directors.

The Outgoing President, IPP Daniel Gan Chun Yang, in his speech briefly updated the floor with the achievements Rotaract Club of ATC had accomplished during the past term under his leadership. He stated that being a President is not as easy as it seems, but the determination and endurance had led the Club to a great length, and he hopes that the incoming Board of Directors would continue to succeed.

Upon finishing his speech, IPP Daniel Gan passes on the Presidential Medal to President Elect Tham Jun Jie, simultaneously symbolises the transition of power to President Elect Tham Jun Jie. The newly-installed President then went on to install his Board of Directors.

The guests were then entertained by the Yoyo Club of Malaysia with their yoyo skills and their sense of humour. The audience were awed by their amazing skills and talent.

IPP Daniel Gan and CP Kwong Chiew Ee

Later, as the night came to an end, a total of 6 guests, randomly picked based on their shoes, had to battle out to get the Best Shoes Award. They were asked to pick a pair of shoes from the opposite sex, and they had to pose and style with the chosen shoes. Adam from the Yoyo Club of Malaysia won under the Men’s Category whilst Miss Felicia Ann, a lecturer from the college itself won under the Women’s Category.

Alas, it was a memorable night and the new Board of Directors had proven themselves worthy with their successful event. Congratulations to President Tham Jun Jie, Rtr. Audrey Tan as the Organising Chairperson, and the new Board of Directors for a spectacular night!

The District Awards and Recognition Night 2009/2010

Posted in Editorial at 4:16 pm by rotaractatc

Rotaractors of ATC with DRR Sanjeev Kumar

Every year we gather around to celebrate. Not to celebrate birthdays or anniversaries, but to celebrate efforts and hard work. This year, The District Awards and Recognition Night for the Rotary Year of 2009/2010 was held last 26th of June 2010.

It was held in Holiday Villa, Ampang. This event bore the significance of recognising projects and people who have worked hard, having to have their efforts acknowledged with a status of excellence.

The 4th District Board Meeting was held simultaneously, and later afterwards, dinner was served for Rotaractors who have attended the event.

District Governor Leslie Salehuddin, had the honour to inaugurate the long awaited awards ceremony.

President Tham Jun Jie, IPP Daniel Gan and CP Kwong Chiew Ee

Among all submitted projects for awards and recognition, Rotaract Club of ATC had been successful being awarded the Best Membership Award. We have also been honoured the Presidential Citation and DRR’s Citation. It is quite an achievement as only 5 clubs in the district was awarded the DRR’s citation.

It is especially meaningful to Rotaract Club of ATC as the club has a much shorter term compared other clubs. Being able to meet with the strict criteria for DRR’s Citation is something to be proud of.

Rotaractors of ATC, beaming with awards.

However so, this will not stop us from achieving and striving for more as the District Awards and Recognition Night has served it’s purpose to encourage our fellow Rotaractors in line with our services to the society. Hopefully, this term, the Rotaract Club of ATC will achieve more awards to live up to it’s predecessor’s accomplishments.

Council approves fifth Avenue of Service

Posted in Editorial at 9:42 pm by chewy

A week before our Rotaracters head into the battle zone (i.e exam hall), we are greeted with a piece of amazing news from RI. The “New Generations” has been officially recognized as the fifth Service Avenue in Rotary. This is a clear evidence of Rotary’s commitment to youth and also recognition to the contributions of young people to the Rotary’s cause as a whole.

Here is an extract of the news:

By Ryan Hyland
Rotary International News — 28 April 2010

Representatives at the 2010 Council on Legislation approved an enactment 28 April to add a fifth Avenue of Service: New Generations.

….

New Generations joins Club Service, Vocational Service, Community Service, and International Service as the foundation of club activity. Before starting a project, Rotarians are asked to think broadly about how their club and its members could contribute within each avenue.

“It’s a significant change – a historic day in Rotary,” said Council Chair Mark Daniel Maloney. “Rotarians have always strongly supported youth activities even though they were never part of the four Avenues of Service. I think this strengthens our commitment.”

The Avenue of New Generations recognizes the positive change implemented by youth and young adults involved in leadership development activities, community and international service projects, and exchange programs that enrich and foster world peace and cultural understanding.

PE JJ (left) and Pres. Daniel

Rotaract Club of ATC is proud to announce the election of Rtr. Tham Jun Jie,  to the position of President Elect after a unanimous agreement from the Board of Directors. He will be taking over the Presidency from President Daniel Gan this coming July.

President Elect JJ (as he is affectionately known), joined the Club last June, and he had immediately made an impression with his commitment to the Club.

“He is very new to Rotaract. However, he is willing to learn, embrace and do his work with enthusiasm. Most importantly, he is willing to contribute and carry on the President’s baton.” President Daniel Gan.

“The most important quality a Rotaract President must possess is commitment to the Club. There is no doubt that JJ possesses this quality. There is no doubt that he is the best candidate to continue the great work of President Daniel, and bring this Club to even greater heights.” Immediate Past President Kwong Chiew Ee.

He’s an easy going person. I’ll be  looking forward to work with him in the forthcoming year. I will give my full support to you.  Gambateh JJ! I have faith in you.” Rtr. Lim Soo Wen, Funding Director

Congratulations PE JJ!

Mother Nature unleashes her wrath yet again, this time in Haiti.

ShelterBoxes for Haiti being packed by the team of volunteers (image courtesy of www.shelterbox.org)

The Red Cross estimates the death toll to be near to 50,000, with up to three million people in Haiti have been affected by Tuesday’s devastating earthquake. Many are spending their nights without shelter or in makeshift camps in the ruined capital, Port-au-Prince.

The people in Haiti are in need of help and basic things for their survival. You can help through contributing to the Rotary program – Shelterbox.

Each Shelterbox costs an average of £490 including all materials to assist the victims in their survival, packing, storage and distribution to individual recipients worldwide.

If you´re are not supporting any other charity please consider making a donation to Shelterbox.
